The Get Moving Retro Fun Ride has been a pretty awesome day…
Excellent costumes and amazing bikes show the creativity and passion for cycling that abound in Nelson.
We had just under 150 registered entrants, and a few unofficial ones… a good result for the postponement/rain date, which clashed with Mother’s Day and a 5km fun run.
The best thing to see was the wide spread of ages – barely one to nearly ninety. And that went for the bikes too! It’s clear that Nelsonians of all ages can head out on a bike for trips as long as 10km and come back smiling. The demonstration -that for several decades bikes were used as daily transport- is a good one for our community.
Turnout was good considering it was a postponed event and clashed with Mother’s Day and a fun run.
$228.50 was raised for the Inclusive Sports Trust.
Excellent work by Belinda Crisp on having plans, templates, contacts and lists in place helped make the whole event more manageable.
Volunteers from Nelson College for Girls and Community Patrol were legendary, covering the whole 10km course in marshals.
The Honest Lawyer did us proud, offering to host us both weekends and providing the bouncy castle. – The venue is awesome. Hirepool also fronted up with the indispensable portaloos twice!
With an emphasis on community-building round Stoke while celebrating our local bikeways, McCashins Brewery were asked to open their Railway Reserve gate to hungry cyclists, and Pic’s Peanuts came to the party with a free ‘slug’ of peanut butter for every participant.
The Vintage bike display fell victim to circumstances, with no reply from Founders to queries about their historic bike collection.

Alton Street Cycles donated this lovely Raleigh, as well as a styley pannier bag, Walz caps for the guys, baskets for the gals, lots of bells and a full-spec floor pump. Village Cycles and Avanti in Richmond donated vouchers for spot prizes.
